Boys At the Ball

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

We picked our eight best dressed ladies.

We counted down our favorite beauty looks.

But what about the boys? Don’t they get any love? After all, they cleaned up pretty nicely, don’t you think? So here it is, folks–Our five boy crushes from last night’s Met Ball (in no particular order). -ALI HOFFMAN

Best Dressed: Alexa Chung

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Today will be dominated with Met Gala talk–and for good reason; it is, after all, the Oscars for the fashion crowd.

But if you’re not attending a gala (or wedding, or prom) anytime soon, there was still some great street style to be spotted yesterday.

Take Alexa Chung, who was strolling around New York City just a few hours before she stepped onto the Met Museum’s red carpet in one of our favorite preppy-art school kid looks. White button-up? Check. Floral brocade blazer? Check? Black skinny jeans, black boots, big shades? Check, check, check.

It’s cool without trying too hard, casual without being sloppy, and unique without looking too out there. Of course, we’re all about interpreting these looks in your own way–but if you’d want to, here are our recommendations:

MUST: Forever 21 Cat Eye Sunglasses – $5.80

TRUST: Blank Denim Skinny Jeans – $78

LUST: Rag & Bone Tapestry 42nd Street Blazer – $297.50

Best Dressed: Solange in Jill Stuart

Monday, May 6th, 2013

At last night’s screening of The Great Gatsby (yes, there was another one–you didn’t expect this movie to have one party and be done, did you?), we saw a lot of black-and-white on the red carpet, from Carey Mulligan in a super-chic blazer to Eve in a sculptural sheath.

But our favorite had to be Solange Knowles. The musician wore a striped number (it’s fall ’13 Jill Stuart, so you can’t buy it quite yet) that showed just enough skin without looking too skimpy. Instead, it felt effortlessly glamorous, like the Brooklynite herself. And since we saw this bold, op-art print from the likes of Marc Jacobs, Lanvin, and Saint Laurent, this is probably just the beginning of a striped takeover. Get ahead of the trend with these picks (plus the exact Burberry wedges Solange wore, because then you can say, ‘What’s black and white and red all over? Me.’):

MUST: Express Striped Ponte Knit Fit and Flare Dress – $55.93

TRUST: Robbi & Nikki Op-Art Strip Blazer – $128

LUST: Burberry Prorsum Silk Satin Wedge Pumps – $695

Best Dressed: Lake Bell

Friday, May 3rd, 2013

When it comes to movies, we love just about everything we see that has Lake Bell in it. Yes, that includes What Happens In Vegas. We’d go so far as to say that there aren’t nearly enough movies with the actress in them.

And just as we love her subtly funny comedic chops, we are equally impressed by this outfit. Dressing for an event like the annual Whitney Art Party is tough, since you’re going up against really amazing works of art. And yet Bell somehow managed to catch our eye without dominating the scene. It helps when you’re wearing Temperley London, but if you’re looking for an equally trippy-tinged dress from the upcoming party season we’ve got a few ideas:

MUST: Express Oversized Double Tassel Cluth – $44.90

TRUST: SixtySeven Lilea Cut-Out Heels – $148

LUST: Nicole Miller Hippie Dream Dress – $420

Best Dressed: Jessica Hart in Ferragamo

There was something about Jessica Hart’s outfit at the Ferragamo launch of L’Icona (a part of the Italian brand’s website that lets you customize the label’s iconic Vara flats) that struck us as familiar. We thought and thought…and then realized, duh: Cher Horowitz.

Yes, this is the best modern take on the now equally iconic Clueless protagonist. Instead of a plaid mini, it’s a print; rather than a preppy blazer, she’s got a moto jacket; and the white over-the-knee socks get turned into over-the-knee boots.

It helps that the model has the blonde locks to pull of the total Betty’s signature style, but we think that just about anyone can rock it, too. Here’s how we’d do it…and you think we’d suggest something that didn’t include a Ferragamo statement piece that you’d buy with daddy’s credit card? As if!

MUST: Forever 21 Zippered Faux Leather Moto Jacket – $42.80

TRUST: DKNY Audrey Pleated Skirt – $101.99

LUST: Salvatore Ferragamo Vara Ginny Patent Flap Shoulder Bag – $895

Best Dressed: Christina Ricci

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

It’s unclear who came up with the old “no white after Labor Day” adage, but it clearly wasn’t someone we’d be friends with because white looks good year-round. And yes, that includes shoes. Because we’re pretty sure that even the most obsessive Serial Mom fan would let Christina Ricci be in an outfit that looks this good.

The actress is tiny, but the proportions here are perfect–midi pencil skirt, sporty-but-chic top, wear-to-everything black clutch–and the simple white shoes are just the (white) icing on the cake. Seriously, imagine this outfit with nude or black shoes and it would be just eh; going ivory gives it a little extra oomph.

Even if you’re not so sure about breaking the fashion rules, Memorial Day is now just 27 days away so you might as well place your order now in preparation of the upcoming unrestricted season.

MUST: Topshop Mesh Insert Color Block Tee – $40

TRUST: Armani Exchange Laser Cut Out Clutch – $88

LUST: Guess Neodan3 Pump – $98.95

Best Dressed: Zoe Saldana in Calvin Klein Collection

Tuesday, April 30th, 2013

If this photo were in black and white, we might not have any idea of when it was from, since Zoe Saldana looks like–to steal a line from Cher Horowitz–a classic Betty. Her fall ’13 Calvin Klein Collection ensemble to the Star Trek Into Darkness premiere in Berlin is retro in all the right ways, from her mini-bouffant hair to her prim knee-length skirt.

The only real hint that this is a very 2013 outfit? The top, which was cropped and, you can’t see from this photo, but criss-crossed in the back. Talk about jaw-dropping.

If you can afford runway, you can get a similar look for almost-retro prices:

MUST: Piper Crop Top – $28

TRUST: Asos Midi Skirt – $39.90

LUST: 7 For All Mankind Danette Sandal – $275

Best Dressed: Selena Gomez

Monday, April 29th, 2013

Let’s forget for a moment that Selena Gomez was at the Radio Disney Movie Awards (we know, go ahead and eye roll because we kind of did too) and that she performed onstage with a bindi (and ongoing controversy, apparently), and instead let’s focus on something we can all agree looks good: her red carpet arrival outfit.

The actress-singer wisely skips the way-too-formal dress in favor of something way fresher: a leather tee and an edgy, interestingly draped skirt. It’s not quite a bubble, not quite a peplum, and arguably way more runway than anything you’ll ever see at an award show like this one. And yet, at the same time, it’s much closer to what we’d be wearing on any given Friday than most of what we saw onstage.

And though those Nicholas Kirkwood heels will set you back quite a bit, the rest of the outfit can be had for well under $100. Let’s be honest: We’re pretty sure you can find more than just red carpet events to rock a (faux) leather top.

MUST: Arden B. Floral Bubble Hem Skirt – $29.40

TRUST: Aqua Faux Leather Tee – $35.10

LUST: Nicholas Kirkwood Sandals – $825

Best Dressed: Bella Thorne

Friday, April 26th, 2013

On paper, describing an outfit as a floral crop top and a floral peplum maxi skirt paired with a statement necklace and a top-bun sounds–to steal a line from Tim Gunn–like a lot of look.

And yet somehow, Bella Thorne–to steal another line from Gunn–makes it work. Maybe it’s because only someone as young and fresh as her could pull it off. Maybe it’s the fact that she’s wearing young up-and-coming designer Katie Ermilio, which we think is pretty awesome. Or perhaps it’s because fashion is made for taking risks, and while two trends might not make a right, five do.

So the office consensus? Thorne, at the Iron Man 3 premiere, is total Best Dressed material. If you’re still not sure, we’ve pulled together an outfit that is a bit more toned down–but yes, we tracked down the skirt because it’s a total keeper.

MUST: Aqua Jewel Tone Cluster Bib Necklace – $48

TRUST: Topshop Broderie High Neck Crop Top – $56

LUST: Katie Ermilio Printed Peplum Evening Skirt – $2,160

Best Dressed: Oh Land

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

When we first saw this photo of Oh Land at Tuesday’s Free Arts NYC Auction, we thought she was in your standard (albeit cute) floral dress.

And then we looked at it a little bit more closely and realized, “Wait…those are tigers!”

Yes, tigers. And suddenly floral seems totally boring when you could be decked out in loads of the striped felines. The rest of the musician’s look has a not-too-obvious connection to tigers: Her shoes are zig-zagged like the cat’s markings, only in black and white instead of black and gold, and her purse looks like a camera case you’d take on safari.

It’s sweet without being saccharine, edgy without being too obvious, and the sort of outfit we’d wear just about everywhere. Yes, even to the zoo.

Here’s how you can, too:

MUST: Express Turn Lock Mini Cross Body Bag – $49.90

TRUST: Urban Outfitters Vintage ’60s Tiger Print Dress – $189

LUST: Nicholas Kirkwood Zig Zag Pumps – $695
