Best Dressed: Selena Gomez

Monday, April 29th, 2013

Let’s forget for a moment that Selena Gomez was at the Radio Disney Movie Awards (we know, go ahead and eye roll because we kind of did too) and that she performed onstage with a bindi (and ongoing controversy, apparently), and instead let’s focus on something we can all agree looks good: her red carpet arrival outfit.

The actress-singer wisely skips the way-too-formal dress in favor of something way fresher: a leather tee and an edgy, interestingly draped skirt. It’s not quite a bubble, not quite a peplum, and arguably way more runway than anything you’ll ever see at an award show like this one. And yet, at the same time, it’s much closer to what we’d be wearing on any given Friday than most of what we saw onstage.

And though those Nicholas Kirkwood heels will set you back quite a bit, the rest of the outfit can be had for well under $100. Let’s be honest: We’re pretty sure you can find more than just red carpet events to rock a (faux) leather top.

MUST: Arden B. Floral Bubble Hem Skirt – $29.40

TRUST: Aqua Faux Leather Tee – $35.10

LUST: Nicholas Kirkwood Sandals – $825

Best Dressed: Bella Thorne

Friday, April 26th, 2013

On paper, describing an outfit as a floral crop top and a floral peplum maxi skirt paired with a statement necklace and a top-bun sounds–to steal a line from Tim Gunn–like a lot of look.

And yet somehow, Bella Thorne–to steal another line from Gunn–makes it work. Maybe it’s because only someone as young and fresh as her could pull it off. Maybe it’s the fact that she’s wearing young up-and-coming designer Katie Ermilio, which we think is pretty awesome. Or perhaps it’s because fashion is made for taking risks, and while two trends might not make a right, five do.

So the office consensus? Thorne, at the Iron Man 3 premiere, is total Best Dressed material. If you’re still not sure, we’ve pulled together an outfit that is a bit more toned down–but yes, we tracked down the skirt because it’s a total keeper.

MUST: Aqua Jewel Tone Cluster Bib Necklace – $48

TRUST: Topshop Broderie High Neck Crop Top – $56

LUST: Katie Ermilio Printed Peplum Evening Skirt – $2,160

Best Dressed: Oh Land

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

When we first saw this photo of Oh Land at Tuesday’s Free Arts NYC Auction, we thought she was in your standard (albeit cute) floral dress.

And then we looked at it a little bit more closely and realized, “Wait…those are tigers!”

Yes, tigers. And suddenly floral seems totally boring when you could be decked out in loads of the striped felines. The rest of the musician’s look has a not-too-obvious connection to tigers: Her shoes are zig-zagged like the cat’s markings, only in black and white instead of black and gold, and her purse looks like a camera case you’d take on safari.

It’s sweet without being saccharine, edgy without being too obvious, and the sort of outfit we’d wear just about everywhere. Yes, even to the zoo.

Here’s how you can, too:

MUST: Express Turn Lock Mini Cross Body Bag – $49.90

TRUST: Urban Outfitters Vintage ’60s Tiger Print Dress – $189

LUST: Nicholas Kirkwood Zig Zag Pumps – $695

Best Dressed: Behati Prinsloo

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

Let’s be real: No matter how many times you roll your eyes at your S.O.’s wardrobe (same goes from your boy bestie), you kind of secretly love his baggy jeans, oversized tees, and worn-in leather jackets.

Now we can’t say for sure whether Behati Prinsloo was raiding a guy’s closet when she got dressed this week for a stroll around New York, but we can tell you that it is totally working. From that not-too-cropped top to those perfectly cuffed jeans to her walk-for-miles shoes, the model totally nails the borrowed-from-the-boys look.

And don’t even get us started on that perfectly placed bandana. Instead, just start borrowing from your closest buddy–or if there’s no guy willing to give up his threads, get it yourself:

MUST: Topshop Tye Dye Wrap Headband – $12

TRUST: BDG Faux Leather Ribbed Collar Bomber Jacket – $59

LUST: Hudson Leigh Boyfriend Pant – $187

Best Dressed: Carey Mulligan in Proenza Schouler

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

When you see celebs rocking something from a designer months before it hits stores, it’s usually on loan for a red carpet event or a major gala.

So you know you’ve really made it when brands like Proenza Schouler send you their fall ’13 collection to just pad around in. Which is kind of what Carey Mulligan was doing in New York earlier this week. That sweater? Proenza fall ’13. Those shoes? Proenza fall ’13. That coffee? OK, that was just from a local cafe.

If you’re loving the black-gray twist on the New York staple (that would be monotone dressing) and don’t want to wait until the end of summer, when they land on shelves, we hunted down a similar version. Coffee is up to you, however.

MUST: N by Nicole Miller Andie Ankle-Strap Ballet Flat – $30

TRUST: AStars Moto Harem Pant – $88

LUST: Closed Silk-Cashemer Sweater – $220.70

Best Dressed: Cara Delevingne

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

We always hear about the differences between New York and London style: One favors classic shapes and head-to-toe black, while the other tends towards over-the-top prints and colors (you can guess which is which).

So it was nice to see a little bit of kooky on the streets of Manhattan this past weekend, courtesy of Londoner Cara Delevingne. The model had on her usual beanie, plus a sweatshirt that we totally owned in the ’90s (and wish we never grew too big for). There was a slight nod to New York–those jeans look rather black to us–without having us think that she lost her accent or anything.

Here’s how we’d turn Delevingne’s London-cool look into a New Yorker-approved outfit:

MUST: Arcane Square on Round Metal Sunglasses – $15.50

TRUST: Jawbreaking Life Is Radical Tank – $32

LUST: AG Adriano Goldschmied The Legging in Leatherette – $198

Best Dressed: Leigh Lezark

Friday, April 19th, 2013

John Shearer/Invision

Some girls love their LBDs. Us? We love our LBJs–that is, our Little Black Jacket. No matter what you throw it over, you suddenly inject a little bit of bad-ass into your look.

Take Leigh Lezark: Now that the DJ has left the dark side, she could blend in with half a dozen other blonde California babes. But at this week’s launch party in Santa Monica for Kiehl’s Limited Edition Ultra Facial Cream (whose labels were designed by Alanis Morissette and Zachary Quinto and 100-percent of the proceeds benefit Recycle Across America), the It Girl kept her edge even by pairing her girly floral dress with a LBJ. What’s interesting is that she layers it over a denim jacket, which we think is kind of genius because we’re still dealing with not-quite-spring, not-quite-winter temps in New York City and are all about the inventive layering.

For a Little House on the Prairie-meets-Please Kill Me look, we’d recommend the following:

MUST: Billabong On The Rocks Dress – $54

TRUST: Collection B Tash Jacket – $58

LUST: Dr. Martens Darcie Boot – $140

Best Dressed: Irina Lazareanu

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

David X Prutting/BFAnyc.com

Having spent the past weekend hanging at the NYLON x Boss Coachella party with Irina Lazareanu, we can attest to the model-slash-musician’s impeccable taste when it comes to clothing. Which doesn’t mean that she’s stuffy; instead, Lazareanu has this enviable ability to take a lot of look and make it seem totally oh-this-old-thing.

Like what she wore out to a party in New York City earlier this week. We’re calling it festival-flapper, with a headband, gauzy maxi dress, and a nice dollop of blush. Heels? Who needs them–especially not when you’ve got on a pair of live-in leather sandals. Whether you wear it to this weekend’s edition of Coachella or to see The Great Gatsby, here’s how we’d rock it:

MUST: Element Indio Dress – $54.50

TRUST: Roxy Bayou Sandals – $54

LUST: Missoni Wave Print Headband – $95

Best Dressed: Sienna Miller in Topshop

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

There’s really some truth behind the saying, “Fresh as a daisy.” Have you ever seen someone wearing the flower pattern not look like they’re coming off of 10 hours of sleep and just made out with their crush on the way over? Exactly.

Sienna Miller looked more than fresh at a kick-off party for the Tribeca Film Festival last night in New York City. Between her daisy embossed Topshop dress with its cute, girly cut (available in stores now!) and her touch of color with that cherry red bag, it’s an update on the type of look we rocked circa ’96, only dressed up a bit with the help of her gold-accented heels.

We haven’t seen her look this good in a while (no, not even that time), and are hoping that some of that daisy chain magic rubs off on us. Here’s how to get her look, even if you’re not Tribeca-bound:

MUST: Free People Clara Stud Heel – $29.95

TRUST: Topshop Dress – $130

LUST: Marc by Marc Jacobs Clearly Top Handle Satchel – $348

Best Dressed: Lily Aldridge

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Our love for all things leopard is pretty out in the open–exhibit a and exhibit b right here–so we kind of fell hard when we saw this outfit Lily Aldridge wore while in New York City yesterday.

Leopard print? Check and check–and if you were wondering, yes those are cat-shaped loafers. So how do you dress up an outfit around all that animal-inspired boldness? By keeping the rest of your look simple. In Lily’s case, she’s rocking a simple cream sweater, a pair of leather-like pants, and your hold-everything black bag so that it’s the print that catches our attention.

Love it as much as we do? We tracked down those exact loafers–but if you can’t swing a couple hundred dollars on a pair of shoes, we’ve got a few more affordable clothing options, as well.

MUST: Guess by Marciano Yasmin Cheetah Scarf – $68

TRUST: J Brand Maria Pants – $200

LUST: Charlotte Olympia Kitty Flat Loafers – $839
