Best Dressed: Kate Bosworth

Monday, April 15th, 2013

The festival look is one we’ve seen for a while–and yet, year after year, we still kind of love it. Why? Maybe it’s our inner-Penny Lane flipping over embroidered vests and gauzy dresses. Maybe it’s our inner-West Coast girl daydreaming about sunshine from overcast New York City. Or maybe it’s just that it always looks good.

And few people do it better than Kate Bosworth. The actress, who attended Coachella with her fiance Michael Polish, gave her desert hippie look a rock’n'roll edge with buckle boots and a pair of aviators. The pieces are from Topshop’s yet-to-be-released Festival collection–more details coming soon! If you can’t wait, pick up the three pieces below, and then pack an oversize tee and a pair of cut-offs and you’re ready for whatever music festival season throws at you.

MUST: Ella Moss Marlow Burnout Tank Fringe Dress – $81.59

TRUST: Bronx Leather Studded Buckle Boot $119.70

LUST: Free People Gypsy Vest – $279.95

Best Dressed: Leelee Sobieski

Friday, April 12th, 2013

Neil Rasmus/BFAnyc.com

We’re not sure when Leelee Sobieski became this chic glamour goddess–but she has. Just scroll through photos from the past few years and it will quickly become clear that the actress who once played the nerd in Never Been Kissed is now a pro at laid-back, borrow-from-the-boys red carpet attire. And yeah, we love it.

Take this outfit, worn to the New Museum’s spring gala earlier this week. Sobieski kills it–and half of her outfit is an oversize tee. What makes it work? The perfectly tailored, showing just enough skin midi-skirt, paired with a pair of not-quite-basic pumps. Slick back your hair, do a quick application of your favorite shade of red lipstick, and you’re good to go–to a gala, a dinner party, or even to see Widowspeak. And before you say it: No, this slit is sooo not Angelina territory. Trust us.

MUST: Gap Essential Short Sleeve Tee – $15

TRUST: Silence and Noise Knit High Slit Maxi Skirt – $59

LUST: Marc by Marc Jacobs Black Suede All Ears Pumps – $380

Best Dressed: Teresa Palmer

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

When Teresa Palmer visited the British Fashion Council’s London Show Rooms’ opening party in L.A. this week, she wore a very un-L.A. dress in that it had long sleeves. We love everything about it–the colors, the prints, the cut–but the thing is, here in New York we’re battling temperatures in the 70s and everyone is breaking out their new summer gear early.

So if you’re feeling inspired by the Australian actress–and we certainly are–but don’t want to invest in a winter-ready dress at this point in the season (or don’t have the $17,200 that her white gold sapphire and diamond ring from Katerina Maxine costs), we’ve figured out an alternative. Yes, with a bit of sleuthing we’ve tracked down a similar black/white/cobalt blue sheath dress, along with a floral blazer to throw over it in case you get cold (and a sick pair of t-strap heels, because we couldn’t resist). Just don’t switch up the orange-red lipstick; it looks so great, it’s basically a non-negotiable.

MUST: Bebe Floral Print Patch Pocket Blazer – $79.99

TRUST: Calvin Klein Colorblock Sheath Dress – $99.99

LUST: Aldo Aserri Perspex Heeled Sandals – $116.38

Best Dressed: Emma Roberts in Vans

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

By now we’ve come to accept–and, let’s face it, love–the fact that this spring we will be wearing a lot of floral and leopard print. But usually, we’re wearing them at different times with different outfits. Not Emma Roberts; the actress stepped out yesterday wearing the two bold patterns in the same look. How’d she pull it off?

Accessories. The key to this double-trouble game is having the floral and leopard in small doses, so that they don’t overwhelm the outfit, but instead accent it. Pair them with a low-key, wear-everywhere ensemble (Roberts goes with a button down tank and a pair of boyfriend jeans) and you’ve got your go-to outfit for the print indecisive.

You can mix and match whichever accessories you’d like, but if you’re as into what Roberts is wearing as us, we’ve found her exact shoes and bag (plus a pair of shades, because it really sometimes is all about the accessories):

MUST: Lulu’s Paparazzi Proof Sunglasses – $9

TRUST: Vans Van Doren Authentic Sneaker – $55

LUST: Loeffler Randall Mini Rider – $395

Best Dressed: Gwyneth Paltrow

Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

On a recent Friday afternoon the NYLON digital team went very, very deep down an Internet dark hole of ’90s Gwyneth Paltrow image searching. From her Calvin Klein sheaths to her platform sandals, she somehow looked so freaking good even in clothes that we’d shudder at the thought of pulling on now.

And then yesterday she was spotted at the airport and we realized: The times have changed, but our love for Gwynnie and her effortlessly cool ensembles remains. The foundation of this outfit is fairly simple–distressed skinny jeans, black boot–but throw on an oversize army jacket, a hold-everything tote, a mish-mash of necklaces, and a pair of just-statement-enough shades and suddenly you’ve got a look.

Yes, you’ll probably be seeing us working a similar outfit all spring long–that is, if we can ever pull ourselves away from the computer screen and stop googling “Gwyneth Paltrow Winona Ryder 90s”. If you’re feeling the same, here’s how to take a page from the Goop-ster herself:

MUST: Dollhouse Distressed Skinny Jeans – $38

TRUST: Guess Rumi Medium Carryall – $118

LUST: Current/Elliott The Infantry Jacket – $268

Best Dressed: Alexa Chung

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Benjamin Lozovsky/BFAnyc.com

Even if it weren’t Alexa Chung, and she wasn’t in this French new wave-meets-British Carnaby Street outfit to The Byrne Notice‘s first anniversary party, we’d still love it.

Why? Well because it’s an end-of-the-season look that we’re certain you’ll want to keep wearing next winter–which means that you can get most of these pieces on-sale right now. Want a double-breasted jacket with graphic gold buttons? We’ve found one that’s practically half-off. Those to-die-for Carven sequined boots? Barneys has them marked down nearly 70-percent. Rock them until the thermometer hits 70, and then pack them away for September, where they’ll feel–and look–practically like new.

Here’s how:

MUST: American Apparel Wool Beret – $24

TRUST: DKNY Double-Breasted Coat – $94.99

LUST: Carven Paillette Ankle Boot – $489

Best Dressed: Ashley Greene

Friday, April 5th, 2013

There are some classics that you just don’t want to mess with. The denim jacket is one of them. A perfect-fitting pair of jeans is another. Some comfortable wear-everywhere flats are a third.

And what would you know, when you combine all three of them together what you get isn’t a hot, boring mess–but instead an eternally cool outfit.

Ashley Greene rocked the trio at the airport on Wednesday, and the truth is that no matter how many times we lust after a dress she wears on the red carpet, it’s looks like this that most closely resemble what we want to be wearing all of the time. If you don’t already own these staples, here’s what we would recommend picking up–including the very pair of pointy-toed shoes she’s wearing:

MUST: Gap 1969 Denim Jacket – $69.95

TRUST: Big Star Envy Super Skinny Jeans – $98

LUST: Matt Bernson Gauloise Perf Flats – $187

Best Dressed: Ashley Olsen

Thursday, April 4th, 2013

Ashley Olsen doesn’t need to be wearing an oversize jacket and major wide-leg trousers to prove to us just how tiny she is (the coffee cup-to-hand ratio is enough of an indicator, anyway). But we’re pretty certain that this outfit she wore while walking the streets of New York City this week was less about looking small and more about going big.

From Lanvin to Jil Sander to Margiela, designers have been playing with proportions in their most recent collections. You could pair a voluminous coat with a pair of skinny jeans–but doesn’t it look a whole lot fresher when worn with not-quite-palazzo pants? We thought so. Add in a pair of borrowing-from-the-boys loafers and you’ve got a look that isn’t quite androgynous, but is definitely architectural.

And as much as we do love our fitted leather moto jackets and pegged denim, it’s nice to see someone trying to break the mold. Ready to do the same? Here’s how you can:

MUST: Mural Boyfriend Pant – $68

TRUST: OAK Cotton-Fleece Poncho – $120

LUST: Elizabeth & James Cassi Loafer – $325

Best Dressed: Zosia Mamet

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

Matteo Prandoni/BFAnyc.com

When we last saw Girls‘ Shoshanna Shapiro, she had just dumped Ray and was living it up. At least, we thought–could it be that season three will see her feeling blue about what went down?

We’ll have a few months wait to find out, but in the meantime it’s sure looking like Zosia Mamet, the actress who plays her, is in the throes of her very own blue period. At the premiere for The Company You Keep in New York City on Monday night, she was dressed in head-to-toe in the moody hue. Think of it as un-color-blocking, where instead of placing two random shades side-by-side (red with orange! Green and black! Purple and yellow!) she pairs two almost-the-same-but-not-quite cerulean tones. The difference is subtle, sure, but we’d compare it to picking up two paint chips and holding them up to the wall to figure out which color you want (before realizing that, wait, the two kind of look awesome together).

This is subtle, but also incredibly sophisticated and, specifically with her blouse-trouser combo, quite ’70s in the best way possible. You can pull off this un-color-blocking with any shade, but if you’re feeling blue like Mamet, here’s how you can do it yourself if you can’t wait for her Honor pre-fall outfit to hit stores in a few months:

MUST: The Limited Pleated-Placket Shirt – $39.99

TRUST: Vince Camuto Ankle Pant – $79

LUST: Club Monaco Eliana Handbag – $249

Best Dressed: Miranda Kerr

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

The KISS theory–that is, Keep It Simple, Stupid–was developed by the Navy in 1960 as a design principle, and though it’s become the punchline in pop culture (my favorite usage would have to be on The Office), the idea behind it is actually a good one that could easily be applied to the way we dress.

So how to keep it simple (stupid) when you’re going through your closet? Go with your favorite basics. Or, if you’re a more visual person, follow Miranda Kerr’s lead. The model spent Sunday strolling around in the ultimate KISS outfit: perfect-cut skinny jeans, totally comfortable ballet flats, pair-with-everything sunglasses, wear-every-day tee, and a floral blazer that says formal while also whispering, “I know how to have fun.” Is this the outfit that will blow minds? Well, no…but if you need a little help pulling together an outfit in the half-dark at 6 a.m., the KISS theory will be your best friend. There are plenty of permutations of it–let us know what your favorite KISS outfit is in the comments below–but if you’re as impressed with Kerr’s look as we are, here’s how you can make it your own:

MUST: Bar III Floral Blazer – $29.99

TRUST: Volcom Sound Check Super Skinny Jeans – $55

LUST: Nine West Widgeon Flat – $59
