Point and Click: Charity Edition

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Here’s a cool and easy way to help out your favorite charity:

Log onto Chase Bank’s Facebook page, and do a quick search for your cause (ie: Food Bank, Art Therapy, Hospital Support, Animal Shelter, etc).

The foundations that get the most Facebook clicks before the holidays will win part of Chase’s $5 million prize.

And that’s a lot of warm meals / warm coats / medicines / school books / bandages / homes for puppies / good stuff.

You can also search for volunteer and charity opportunities at Buy Less Crap.

Just In Case…

If we’d known there were going to be so many new “designer” laptop cases, we would have made a trend page for them!

At left is the Harajuku Lovers laptop case by Gwen Stefani, whose little cartoon persona you can see in the blonde hair and purple heart-eyed mask in the print.

They’ve also got an iPhone cover and some other tech-happy goodies.

But not Gwen’s email address.

Which is sad.

Because obviously, who wouldn’t want to IM Gwen in the middle of the night and be like, “Hey, what should I wear tomorrow?”

Stick To It

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Check out the alphabet sticker at left.

It’s from designer Chris De Lorenzo, who also made “F Is For Fox” and “W Is For Walrus” (and “Z is for Zeus,” which is random and great).

You might think the stickers belong on a kid’s bedroom or notebook, but actually no -

They’re actually meant to cover up your computer keys.

That’s okay, since most typing is based on instinct, but still a little scary -

What if you looked down and saw a picture of a gnome instead of an “E”?

And then you were like, “Wait, Gnome, E?” until you realized it wasn’t a gnome, it was actually an elf?!

See the whole sticker set on NotCot and then decide if you could actually use it.

Piece Of My Art

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Last night, there were a lot of things that rocked:

Wool & The Gang’s new studio rocked.

Sara Beltran’s new jewelry pieces rocked.

NYLON’s party at the new Gap store really rocked (thanks, TV/TV!).

But none took rocking quite as seriously as the Art Rocks! New York benefit.

The organization works to raise money and spread awareness about diabetes with the help of emerging artists.

They did that last night (with Arden Wohl and Trovata designer John Whitledge as hosts) by auctioning off pieces by Tim Barber, Leo Fitzpatrick, Natalie Shook, among others.

You can learn more about the organization here - and check out a few of our favorite pieces below. (That would be NYLON’s Nisha Gopalan above, dreaming about owning the piece.)

C is for Cookie!

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Watch out, girls:

Fred Flare is now in possession of one of the most dangerous books of our time.

It’s not a political manifesto, or a guide to contacting space aliens.

No, it’s a macaron cookbook, which means the tasty treats you get at La Duree in Paris or Dean & Deluca in NYC are actually, amazingly, things you can produce in your own kitchen.

It turns out all you need are some eggs, butter, flour, almond and vanilla extracts, and a lot of patience.

The book retails for $15.95.

The countless hours you will spend in your kitchen trying to perfect your macaron recipe?

Those you’ll have to finance and fulfill yourself.

Get Stoked!

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Last night I went to a party for NYLON’s (unofficial) favorite non-profit: Stoked Mentoring!

Stoked helps at-risk youth in NY and LA learn life-skills through surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding.

(Steve, one of Stoked’s founders, took me surfing this summer, and trust me, there’s A LOT to learn from getting your ass handed to you by a wave.)

It Started With a Low Light…

Friday, November 13th, 2009

CNN reports that “a significant amount of water” has been found on the moon.

That’s a big deal, as it confirms that life could exist somewhere besides earth - at least according to conventional science.

But who says “life” has to come from carbon based, water drinking organisms?

Maybe there’s a whole other way for life to exist, but we don’t have the science or experience to know about it.

NASA isn’t saying much about that theory, but they’re reporting their water findings right now on the news.

Have a look - and keep your eyes out for UFOs.

Are You Going Vegetarian for Thanksgiving?

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Warning:

If you like cute animals, do not click on this New York Times story.

It’s about vegetarian Thanksgiving, and manages to include the only cute, adorable, wide-eyed photograph of a turkey that’s ever been taken.  Which seems kind of unfair for the omnivores among us.

Still, the story also has four recipes for Thanksgiving veggies, and includes comments from chefs, nutritionists, and foodies with their tips for a satisfying, healthy, delicious vegetarian Thanksgiving.

I’m betting that doesn’t include Tofurkey, which - while fun - has been universally declared “gross” by our office… oh wait, Kelly just said, “I’d eat it.”  Okay, so there’s one…

Anyway, that leads to a really good question for you guys:

Who’s having a vegetarian Thanksgiving?  And what will you be eating?
