It’s On Tape

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Artist Mark Khaisman knows what to do with all the packing tape left over from your last move -

He’s been taking extra rolls and turning them into paintings.

But it gets weirder -

His sticky tape art is directed specifically at Hitchcock movies, including Spellbound, at left.

Need to see more?

Do it on CNN, where they’ve got a full gallery of his latest exhibit.

The Art of Keeping Time

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Andy Warhol once said, “They say that time changes things, but really I think you have to change them yourself.”

So I wonder what he’d think about these Andy Warhol watches, on sale today at Trilogy.

Each comes with a later Warhol graphic, plus something a little wonky -

A hot pink face, a square shape, etc.

They’re cute but also kind of inaccurate.

After all, in Warhol World, shouldn’t the only clock that actually exists be a timer that counts down every fifteen minutes?

Bing! You’re famous.

Bing! You’re not.

Well… guess Perez already has that job covered…

Don’t Get Up

Friday, October 30th, 2009

On Sunday, you’ll probably want to stay in bed all day with DVDs, a Hulu play list, and two giant bottles of water.

The only problem is, when you’re tired and possibly still drunk, the possibilities for spillage are endless.

And you don’t want to wreck your new Calvin Klein bedspread, do you?

Thankfully, designer Peter White has your back.  He made these crazy trays in yellow, red, and white to successfully stand-in for a tabletop when all you want is some Chinese takeout and the last episode of Flash Forward.

Check out Peter’s design, and his other projects, at bywhite.com

It’s National Oatmeal Day!

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

According to the infallible news source Twitter, today is National Oatmeal Day.

Lina likes steel cut oats, Tylan says Starbucks oatmeal is “perfect,” Kelly prefers the oatmeal at Jamba Juice, and Jay refuses to eat it because “it looks like little dead space aliens.”

My thoughts exactly.

Actually, no, I like dried oatmeal as part of granola.

But why do we need a National Oatmeal Day?  Anybody?

Are You Suffering From the Fame Disease?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

CNN has an article today on “Fame Motive.”

According to some psychologists, it’s a neurological condition that takes our human need for connection and misreads it, in brain synapses, as a need for attention instead.

Psychologist Orville Brim says “The desire for attention may date back to the days of early humans, who lived in small groups. Those who were not approved by a group that protected all of its members would genetically disappear and die off.”

If that sounds more severe than sitting alone in a cafeteria, take heed - it’s only a theory.

And we’d argue that someone like Paris Hilton, left, uses fame much more as an economic success strategy - and a means of snidely acute cultural satire - than some sort of deep emotional gap.

But if you’re experiencing the following symptoms:

*Doing videos in the shower and posting them on Facebook

*Photoshopping US Weekly spreads to make it look like you’re the one with Leighton, not Blake

*Hiding in an attic while setting a balloon loose in your neighborhood

It may be time to get help.

Bunnies Take Over the World

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Who knew some cartoon bunnies could be so ubiquitous?

Just weeks after we spotted Le Petit Lapin at Forever 21, they’ve moved into TopShop with a new series of bunny holiday cards!

Sold for charity, the cards - featuring tiny Peter Cottontail and friends in head-to-toe TopShop outfits - retail for about $8 a pack and can be found in the TopShop store and online.

You can also (still) score Petit Lapin stuff at Le Sportsac.

Is this a new meaning for the term “multiplying like rabbits”?

Eddie Borgo’s Pumpkin Can Beat Up Your Pumpkin

Monday, October 26th, 2009

I’m already jealous of my friend Stephanie LaCava for her amazing Rick Owens jacket.

Now I’m also jealous of her weekend:

She hung out with jewelry designer (and total sweetheart) Eddie Borgo for Vogue.com and made the most fashionable jack-o-lanterns I’ve ever seen.

Featuring Eddie’s trademark studs and grommets, the pumpkins come with a handy how-to photo gallery so you can (attempt) to do it yourself.

(Although be warned: I tried this morning with some leftover spikes from an accessories story and a mini-pumkin - it was really, really hard).

Happy Birthday, Annabelle!

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Happy Birthday, Annabelle Dexter-Jones!

The face of Charlotte Ronson (who also happens to be Char’s little sister!) gets to eat some special cupcakes today.

Annabelle is currently studying at Bard college, and models in the Hogan ads with NYLON It Girl Josephine de la Baume and artist Nate Lowman.

You can see her walk in Charlotte’s shows here and here.

Yay Annabelle!
