Proenza Schouler Goes Back To Square One

Friday, June 14th, 2013

It’s hard to think about Proenza Schouler as upstarts; at this point, their show during New York Fashion Week is one of the most anticipated. And yet, it was just 10 years ago that the duo staged their very first runway show (prompted, in large part, by the fact that Barneys purchased their entire Parsons senior thesis collection the year before).

In the time since they’ve become celeb darlings, worn by everyone from Carey Mulligan to Liv Tyler, and a fashion buzz brand. And last night, the two Proenza-obsessed worlds collided in a party in L.A. celebrating the launch of First Collection, a reissued capsule of the pieces they sent down the runway a decade ago. It’s available to purchase at–where else?–Barneys, and was feted by–who else?–the very women who love to wear Proenza.

And of course, they were all dressed in Proenza. Which meant that, yeah, they all looked good–here are our five favorites:

We Love This Photo: Olivia Wilde’s Friend Is Over(All) It

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

Olivia Wilde is pretty awesome–she’s funny, she’s smart, and she’s cool enough to land on the cover of our magazine–but we’ve got to be honest: When we saw this photo of her at last night’s MySpace event in L.A. our first thought was, “Who’s your friend?!”

Because while she might not be as famous, she’s definitely rocking our dream party outfit. This is how overalls should look: Comfortable but not sack-like, form-fitting without being too tight. That it’s paired with a perfect white tee? Even better.

So sure, we’d hang out with Wilde any day–but if she could introduce us to her pal? And let us go shopping with her? Yes, please! –REBECCA WILLA DAVIS

First Look: See by Chloé

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

“It’s so NYLON,” a See by Chloé rep told us at last night’s resort preview. We excitedly followed him through the crowd to view the latest from our beloved Chloé diffusion line, but not before grabbing a piña colada served in a coconut-like shell cup, which has become one of our resort preview prerequisites.

As you can conclude from this print on top of stripes, mixed with more prints, and patent-metallic sneakers situation—he wasn’t lying. The rest of the line has so many other favorites like a super ’70s mini graphic tank, patriotic color ways, a navy jumpsuit (also paired with sneakers), denim-on-denim, cross-body bags, and collared shirts and dresses. So yeah, there’s a lot to work with. But what’s truly worth noting: none of it feels too feminine or too quirky. It’s as effortlessly cool and chic as its mom, regular Chloé.

We know it’s tough, but you’ll have to wait until next January to get your hands on these pieces. But that doesn’t mean you can start drawing inspiration from See by Chloé and regular Chloé right now. But maybe avoid the heavy knits for now.—RAY SIEGEL

The Simpsooooons!

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

We were still reeling with excitement over yesterday’s sneaker collab announcement— Rick Owens x Adidas—when news of The Simpsons x Chuck Taylor All Star hit our inbox.

The collection honors the show’s upcoming 25th season, and unlike Jeremy Scott’s famous Bart-centric line, all of the show’s characters will be represented. We’re happy about that considering our tiny Maggie Simpson obsession. The sneakers will be sold at Journeys.com and Converse.com starting June 15th. D’oh! I almost forgot to give you the prices: the unisex styles will range from $37-$65.—RAY SIEGEL

New Collab: Rick Owens x Adidas

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

Another day, another exciting new collab: according to WWD, Rick Owens is designing a line of Adidas running shoes for men and women. But don’t worry, they’ll bet set at a lower price point than the rest of his footwear (between $400-$500) and you’ll actually be able to run in them!

“I work out like a fiend but I hate, hate, hate cardio. I realized I’m in my fifties now and I need to do something for my heart and lungs. So, I’ve got to start running,” Owens admitted to WWD. “I thought to myself, ‘What shoes am I going to wear running?’ I can’t wear my big chunky basketball shoes–I’d look like a dinosaur running through the Tuileries.” That would be almost as bad as Jeremy Scott running through Runyon Canyon without poodles on his feet.—RAY SIEGEL

*Note: Photos of the line haven’t been released yet. The shoe above is by Adidas, available here.

Editor’s Pick: Don’t Trip

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

I spent the majority of the summer after my senior year of high school in a pair of cut-off jean shorts and an oversize, ill-fitting tie-dye T-shirt from my graduating class’s all-night party. I certainly felt no nostalgia for high school, so it must have been an ode to Jerry Garcia, who ascended to hippie heaven that August.

Most memorably, I wore it to a festival where I met Weezer, who had recently released my personal teenage angst anthem, “Undone – The Sweater Song.” I begged the guys to sign my shirt, and they proceeded to draw their logo and “PSYCHEDELIC” in swirly letters across the back from shoulder to shoulder. From then on, I stopped washing the tee but continued to wear it with embarrassing regularity.

At some point it unceremoniously disappeared from the bottom drawer of my childhood dresser, but this Don’t Trip tee, with its unnecessary umlaut and unsubtle double-entendre skater tee lettering, just might become my new weekend uniform—with routine laundering, of course. I am a grown-up. –MELISSA GIANNINI
