pawnee vs. portlandia

ds

OMG!

According to IFC, Portlandia will be getting the book treatment this November.

But wait…how will it compare to Pawnee: the Greatest Town in America from Parks and Rec?

Only time will tell….

california dreaming

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

ds Although the title of her book might suggest otherwise, the latest from Laura Owens isn’t about fruits or nuts…not really, anyway.

Instead, she uses the joke about California being filled with fruits and nuts as a jumping-off point for her collection of 1960s newsprint from the state.

Each of these hand-made pages is plastered with random articles and photos from San Francisco and LA, then later screenprinted with her own illustrated alphabet of fruit and nuts.

Random? Yes.

Kind of awesome?

Also true.

So if your coffee table needs a jolt of humor (and whose doesn’t?), buy it here.

child’s play from chris colfer

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Chris Colfer just gave us a reason to volunteer for babysitting duty.

And knowing us, this is a big deal.

The GLEE star has just revealed the cover of his new children’s book The Land of Stories, and it actually looks kind of awesome.

A self-described “modern day fairytale,” this illustrated story was originally set for an August release.

But now that the publishers have bumped the drop date up to July, that means you can buy it for your little sister (or um, yourself?) even earlier.

Get a closer look at the cover here!

“My Apologies To Mark Twain”

Monday, January 16th, 2012

markWe’ve fallen hard for this Huckleberry Finn baseball tee.

It’s got a great graphic, it looks incredibly soft, and if you wear it, there’s always the hope that someone, somewhere, will quote a line from Easy A to you.

(See the title above.)

You can get it for $42 at Out of Print Clothing.

And yes, we do recommend that you actually read the book first.

marilyn’s stuff, the book

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

ds In 1999, Christie’s auctioned off tons of Marilyn Monroe’s personal property.

You could buy her lime green Pucci blouse, or a pink feather boa, or a set of soda tumblers.

But just in case you weren’t around for the real thing, now there’s a book that captures it all.

Assouline has just debuted a 400-plus page coffee table tome that details each and every item up for grabs.

Unfortunately, just like in the auction itself, getting close to Marilyn doesn’t come cheap- the book retails for a cool $1,200 on Net-a-Porter.

Or if you want to see the goods (for free!) click here.

dsLeave it to Momofuku to make a cookbook that we’ll actually use.

David Chang just unveiled the Momofuku Milk Bar Cookbook, based off of the New York restauranteur’s  popular downtown dessert location.

Featuring favorites like Compost Cookies to Blue Cheese Croissants to Cereal Milk Yogurt along with 100 color photographs of them all, it’s the instant cure to holiday boredom (plus, a much-needed break from gingerbread houses and Christmas cookies).

Santa, we hope you’re listening….

good idea or bad idea: the hunger games cookbook?

Monday, December 19th, 2011

dsGet ready, because The Hunger Games madness continues.

First was the nail polish collection from China Glaze, and now with The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook.

This hard copy cookbook has more than 150 recipes inspired by Katniss’s hunting skills (lamb stew with fried plums), Peeta’s bakery (french bread), and the Capital’s decadent meals (rich chocolate cake).

We have to admit, given the premise of the book, it’s pretty clever.

But then again, it might be a little bit too literal.

Would you really want to eat Wild Dog Beef Stew?

Or Small Critter Casserole? Yes, you can make it with real “small critters.”

Are you into the idea, or do you prefer to leave some things (i.e. what Katniss and Peeta would eat in the wild) to the imagination?

Buy it at Amazon.

brain food

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

dsFact: it’s hard to wake up in the morning, let alone accomplish stuff before we have our coffee.

But thanks to the new book 106 Impossible Things Before Breakfast, we’re now inspired to stop hitting snooze and actually do stuff after we roll out of bed.

It’s filled with fun and random problems, questions, and hypothetical scenarios (ever wanted to dodge a bullet?) that seem impossible -but aren’t necessarily, literally forcing your brain to wake up.

After all, it never hurts to have some critical thinking to go along with your cappuccino…

Buy it at Urban Outfitters.
