Bridget Jones, the Threequel

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

Earlier this year, the big news broke that two Bridge Jones books was not enough–and that a third would be released this year.

Today, we finally get a glimpse of the book and clearly, Ms. Jones has officially entered the 21st century. The threequel, called Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy follows the cheeky Brit who may or may not still be with Mark Darcy. Instead of rules like going to the gym and quitting smoking, which were discussed in the original 1996 book, this edition sees Jones dolling out lines like, “Do not text when drunk.” We’d add Tweeting in there too, but otherwise are in agreement.

And yes, there’s even an excerpt:

Burn One: OC Candle Collab

Friday, December 7th, 2012

Everyone collaborates with everyone, but there’s something about an OC collaboration that can always get our attention. When a perfume house responsible for some of the most shocking things we’ve gotten a whiff of teams up with the best store on the planet, that’s reason enough for us to splurge on a scented candle.

And we love that you can personalize the label, which if you haven’t caught on yet, it’s the most fun way to send a funny note to a friend attached to something they’ll actually want to use all the time.—RAY SIEGEL

Girls Who Like Boys: Light Up

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

Truth be told, we like manly scented candles better than girly ones—this Belstaff one in particular. It’s mber-y, whiskey-y, and tobacoo-y—so basically it smells like boys. And after all, we are girls who like boys. Light your candle, here.—RAY SIEGEL

Girls Who Like Boys: 50 Shades of Kate

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

You can see Kate Moss in magazines, music videos, and–starting November 6–in her very own coffee table book. Because really, why wouldn’t she get her own tome?

And since this is Kate Moss, there’s not one but eight different covers. Not quite 50 Shades of Kate, but pretty damn close. This one, shot by Corinne Day for The Face, is my favorite…but you can see all eight covers of The Kate Moss Book over at NYLON Guys. –REBECCA WILLA DAVIS

Good Idea Or Bad Idea: The Book Trailer

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

When I first saw this trailer I was like, Oh cool, MIA has a new project.

And then I was like, Oh wait, this is all her old music.

And then I was like, Oh weird, this is a trailer for her upcoming Rizzoli book.

Apparently, book trailers are now a thing. And if anyone is going to be ahead of the curve, it would be the rapper (and NYLON cover girl). Of course, a movie trailer gives you some inkling of what to expect if you were to see it in the movie theater, whereas I’m still not sure what we’ll find in MIA: The Book, besides pages and pages of trippy prints and bright lipstick.

So book trailers: good idea or bad idea? –REBECCA WILLA DAVIS

the ultimate pencil case

pencil case

Color us easily amused, but UO has pencil cases in the shape of a pencil and we love them.

You can choose from plain or plaid. You can fill them with this awesome, pop culture set of No. 2s or get nostalgic for your glitter jelly pens. And if you were still in middle school, these would make all of your friends very jealous. Get them here!

Power Point

Friday, July 13th, 2012

imageWe’ve re-lived our favorite teen power couples (Dawson and Joey forever!) and pontificated on “Why I’m such a Liz Lemon“, but Greenwich Letterpress’ new pencil set conquers a whole new set of pop culture phenomena.

Although pencils sometimes seem near extinction (thanks to QWERTY), the novelty of these has not worn off. The new collection features potential pop culture essay prompts like “Why I’m Relieved LOST is over” and “Why I love John Hughes movies”. You know the really important things to think long and hard about.

We highly recommend you grab a set for $8 online. They’re a fool-proof cure for writer’s block.

wonderland_transitmap

As huge Alice fans (our Web Editor Jazzi even has an Alice quote in permanent ink!), we’ve totally fantasized about taking a trip to Wonderland. Even though living in NYC feels like halfway there. If we did fall down a rabbit hole to find the key to an incredibly small door, we’d probably be just as confused, or, well…lost, as Alice was.

If she had been traveling via subway, this transit map might have come in handy (then maybe Alice wouldn’t have relied on the Cheshire cat for directions).

In other words, we think this depiction is great, and we sort of wish it was real – or at least an amusement park land. And yes, we’ve already planned out our route. First stop? March Manor for the Mad Tea Party of course.

Although, if we wanted to make it to that game of croquet with the queen, it looks like we’d have to hop on a different line.

If you love this guide to Looking-Glass land as much as we do, it also comes on a tee shirt. Get it for $25 here.

P.S. Remember when Alice conquered the streets of Paris, France in this graffiti rendition?

don’t forget the lyrics

crap-lyrics-2

We’ve all probably found ourselves singing a pop song without actually paying attention to the lyrics. And sometimes, when you see those lyrics written out… well, hilarity ensues.

Take our current fave lyrics from the Beib’s “Boyfriend” for example…

Swag, swag, on you/chillin’ by the fire while we’re eating fondue…

Which is why this new book from Urban Outfitters has us cackling.

Written (and compiled) by Johnny Sharp, Crap Lyrics is a catalogue of some of the worst words ever put to music, at least according to Sharp…like “Work It” by Missy Elliot and “My Humps” by Black Eyed Peas.

Some things just aren’t meant to be over-analyzed, but we can totally appreciate a little mockery of some really awful lines, so we’re curious to see which other songs made the cut.

If you are too, you can buy the book for $12.95 here and see if your favorite song made the cut. And of course, if you’ve got some hilariously awful lyrics, please share them with the class.
