‘It's Pretty’ Archive

Congrats Coco!

American girls love Rimmel London, but even though the brand loves us back, it’s been pretty strict with their ads so far:

All Rimmel girls must be residents of the UK, and that certainly includes their famous faces Kate Moss, Lily Cole, and Sophie Ellis Bextor.

We have no complaints about their choices so far - between Kate’s style, Lily’s poise, and Sophie’s penchant for fun disco hits, we’ve pretty much found our dream girls.

But this season, for the first time ever, Rimmel announces a fellow North American to join the Brit pack. She’s Coco Rocha, an ‘08 NYLON It Girl whose dual passions are catwalks and Irish dancing.

Hailing from Canada, Coco will start appearing in ads by 2010, and we’re so excited!

Also new to Rimmel?

Georgia May Jagger, the 17-year-old face of Hudson Jeans… and the girlfriend of music cutie Django James.

That’s Nuts!

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

There are perfumes that smell like freshly-mowed grass, lipsticks that smell like grape Jelly Ranchers, and nail polish that smells like a glass of OJ.

But this is the first time we’ve seen nut-scented lotions.

Desert Essence, which makes organic and vegan beauty products, has just introduced Almond Hand and Body Lotion and Pistachio Foot Repair Cream.

They are, as advertised, a little nutty.

Although the almond fragrance is surprisingly subtle, the real winner is the pistachio cream — besides the fact that pistachio nut oil is a great moisturizer, the sweet-but-spicy scent is a far cry from the average snack bowl you’d find at a bar.

Have you met Arielle De Pinto?

She’s a very cool jewelry designer based in New York City.

Arielle makes most of her products by knitting threads of metal together, the way you might crochet a scarf or gloves, but out of silver instead.

For her Spring 2010 collection, Arielle’s got some gorgeous models, a cool location, kickass designs…

And bright yellow nails!

Yeah!

Check out the whole thing at Arielle’s website.

She Nailed It

There are many reasons to love NYLON’s Beauty Director, Holly Siegel, but chief among them is her ability to predict trends.

Turn to page 146 of your October issue for proof.

The My Little Pony-inspired tresses? Showed up on the spring ‘10 runways of designers like Proenza Schouler and Giles Deacon.

Two-toned lips? We’ve already spotted a few party girls doubling up their pout power.

But there were a few looks that didn’t make it into the mag because of space constraints. Which is why Holly let us sneak a behind-the-scenes shot while the model got prepped. Check out a few other nail options, in case baby blue isn’t quite your speed…

A View From the Top

The New York Times shot this incredible halfway done hairdo backstage at Hussein Chalayan.

The hair was pinned over the smooshy cap, then curled, then pinned again.

We wonder how long it took to get the hair this way, but also -

How long it took the models to get it all out?!

I’m Just A Curl In The World

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Last night, I got my hair read.

That’s right, hair read. Imagine a palm reader, only trade life lines for curl patterns.

Apparently my Daisy Buchanan-meets-Debbie Harry bob means that I’m stressed, I’m smart, and I desperately need a nap.

I got my reading last night at the 25th anniversary party for Ouidad, the NYC salon for those with not-so-straight hair. I have Ouidad to thank for the cut I’ve been rocking six years now, as well as some of my favorite products for curly locks, so it was great to raise a glass in the salon’s honor.

And really, who better to host a hair reader than a place that doesn’t need psychic abilities to read your curly hair? xxRebecca

At the Balenciaga spring ‘09 show, the models walked down the runway with a streak of black eyeshadow stretching from their lids to their hair line.

It’s a look that we might not recommend in real life, if it weren’t for Kristen Wiig.

The SNL star rocks the exact same look as Maggie Mayhem in Whip It, using heavy liner as war paint when she’s on the roller derby rink.

Which begs the question: Did Nicolas Ghesquière get a sneak peek of Drew Barrymore’s film before it came out?

Nothing Rhymes with Orange

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Just before his infamous 90210 collection hit the runway in London, the designer Henry Holland passed me a present -

A tube of M.A.C lipstick labeled “Morange.”

It was an aggressive citrus color, so opaque it totally erased any pigment from the lip, replacing it with something so bright that it recalled Tony the Tiger on the otherwise boring box Frosted Flakes.  It was seriously intense.

All of Henry’s models, including Agyness Deyn and Daisy Lowe, sported the Morange on the runway, and I tried wearing it to his after party before chickening out halfway through and swapping to a sparkly pink gloss (a result, I think, of Peaches G asking as nicely as possible, “What are you wearing?” when she saw me).

I never saw Morange again… until today, when the Chapurin runway photos from Paris landed in my inbox.

The designers seem to have offset their swishy goddess draping with some serious Tropicana lip color, the first I’ve seen in Paris, ever.

Do you think it’s worth trying again?

Agyness in the House!

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Since she wasn’t walking in any New York fashion shows, we spotted Agyness Deyn a total of once this past week - and that was in the elevator to TopShop’s Christopher Kane previews.

Fortunately, our spy Steve Rojas had better luck, and lured the supermodel to Archetype Showroom for a quick-and-cute April 77 photoshoot.

Here’s Agyness in all her new black-bobbed glory, sporting pieces from April 77’s Fall collection.

We love her crazy goofy smile and also the striped jacket.

And how do you guys feel about the new haircut?

Let us know in the comments section below.

AGGY 4 EVER!

Blue’s Clues

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Though the inspiration at last night’s Proenza Schouler show included surfers, skateboarders, and eccentrics, we’ve got a feeling that the NYLON team is behind part of the beauty look.

A few weeks ago, NYLON’s Beauty Director Holly Siegel added baby blue and cotton candy pink streaks to her hair.

Soon after, NYLON’s Style Director Dani Stahl dyed the tips of her locks Smurf blue.

And yesterday, Didier Malige for Frederic Fekkai broke up the loose, tousled surf-inspired waves with a bit of cerulean and lilac hair dye.

Although only two girls got a shot of color (and it didn’t last for long - right after the show they whisked them to the nearest Fekkai salon to return to their original blonde shade), it was all anyone could talk about today.

Does this mean Manic Panic sales are about to skyrocket?
