Beauty Obsession of the Week: Mouth Off

Friday, April 12th, 2013

NYLON’s Beauty Director Katie Dickens favorite arrival of the week: Anyone who’s ever had chronically chapped lips can tell you that the old stand-bys can sometime exacerbate the problem.

If you’ve tried every balm, jelly and salve out there to no avail, then consider Hourglass’s Lip Treatment Oil your lip liberator. A combination of 14 essential oils, plus three potent active ingredients, that would take too long to explain, work together to hydrate and protect even the most hopelessly dried out pouts.

Just hold on until May when it’s in stores.

It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. I love their lip tars, and their loose eyeshadows, their concealers…seriously, let me stop, because it’s just unhealthy at this point.

What you may not know is that OCC also offers a kick-ass assortment of nail polishes, some which are the counter-parts to their lip tars; and, you guessed it, they have fueled my obsession even further since I haven’t been able to stop painting my nails with them.

Right now, my favorite is the Phantasm nail lacquer, which beams with teal-blues and silvers, a foiled metallic perfect for subtle holographic bling. One part furturistic and one part mermaid, needless to say, it’s a definite staple to add in your nail polish anthology. Want in? Get yours right here.

pop tart

My obsession with Pop-Tarts started in 5th grade, when a boy at my elementary school starred as a “cool kid” in a Pop-Tarts commercial (if you have a good memory, you’ll likely recall Kellog’s super awesome “Breakfast Crew” campaign. For the rest of you, here’s a reminder). I–along with every single kid at my school–was really, really jealous.

Then a few years passed and my obsession for the tasty breakfast pastry subsided–that is until a couple years ago, when I found out that Joseph Gordon-Levitt also made a cameo in a Pop-Tart commercial back in ’91. Yup, here’s the proof.

And then yesterday, I saw this insanely realistic Pop-Tart nail polish and my obsession officially upgraded to a full-blown love affair. Get it here, ’cause it’s craaazzzyy good. -ALI HOFFMAN

Leona Lewis X The Body Shop

With a new album and world tour kicking off this month, we have no idea where Leona Lewis found the time to launch a new collection with The Body Shop–but we’re pretty happy she did.

From a handful of super-shiny lip glosses to a couple glittery shimmer palettes, to a musky-sweet perfume, the cruelty-free collection is limited edition and boasts a cool, artsy deer motif on the packaging. With the range hitting stores next week (April 15th), the British singer talked to us about what we can expect, her daily makeup routine, and her horse named Spirit.

Editor’s Pick: Pretty In Pink

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Full disclosure: I’m pretty lazy when it comes to doing my makeup. In fact, I try to not spend more than five minutes applying it in the morning. So the quickest route to a “done” look, I’ve found, is a bright lip. This hot pink shade from Laqa & Co. will do the trick. And the chubby pencil makes application practically foolproof. It’s fast and easy! –KATIE DICKENS

Wes Anderson’s Just Like Candy Part 3

Friday, March 29th, 2013

We’ve reached the third and final part of the Wes Anderson-Roman Coppola mini-film for Prada, and if you aren’t already charmed by Candy (named after the brand’s new fragrance and played by Léa Seydoux), this should do the trip.

Why? Because retro salons always look amazing, getting annoyed by boys is always relatable, and heading out to have a good time is always the moment we want to be in. Don’t believe me? Watch the video above…and if you’re just tuning in, catch up on parts one and two. C’est magnifique! –REBECCA WILLA DAVIS

Editor’s Pick: All That Glitters Is Gold

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

Glitter nail polish is one of those things where, in theory, it’s great. But in practice, it’s pretty underwhelming; you’re lucky if you get more than two flecks on each finger.

Which is why my jaw dropped the first time I tested out Stun from Floss Gloss, the San Francisco-based brand’s holographic gold glitter. It is one complete swipe of sparkle for your nails–no need to do multiple coats, I promise.

And it turns out, that’s the point–when we talked to the duo last year, they told us, “I love crystal ball nails but I always have to do 18 coats of any polish. We were like, We need one-coat glitter!”

Now you do too–get your bottle (only $8 each) from the NYLON Shop! –REBECCA WILLA DAVIS

First Look: Dior Addict #IconicColors

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

Yesterday, Dior released a couple teaser videos for their latest Dior Addict campaign starring Dutch bombshell Daphne Groeneveld. They definitely served their purpose…total tease.

And thankfully the French fashion house didn’t leave us in anticipation for too long–Minutes ago, the brand released the full campaign video, which we are happy to report was worth the wait! From dancing lipsticks to a Daphne flip book shown in stop motion to an in-the-club techno beat, it’s pretty much a whirlwind of amazingness.

Watch it now. And then watch it again. -ALI HOFFMAN

Wes Anderson’s Just Like Candy (Part 2)

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

Yesterday we shared with you the news that Wes Anderson teamed up with Roman Coppola to make a mini-movie for Prada, along with part one of the flick. It features Léa Seydoux as Candy (which happens to be the name of the brand’s upcoming fragrance as well), a fun-loving French girl who has not one but two suitors.

Watch it again here–and then come right back, because we’ve got a sneak peek at part two. I won’t give too much away, but…there are balloons, birthday cake, and an awesome soundtrack. (And in case you were wondering, that final party track is “L’Idole” by Jacques Dutronc.) And then stay tuned for part three to find out who Candy ends up with. –REBECCA WILLA DAVIS
