Major throwback/flashback/OMG moment!

Check out Julia Stiles on our cover way back in Sept/Oct of 1999!

Okay first thing to notice is the dope Hawaiian tropical vibe–Come on, it’s amazing. Second, is that a halter top? We sure hope so. Third, 1999 is also the same year 10 Things I Hate About You came out, which means we were def on point with this one. Hashtag: Kat Stratford? Third: What’s up, Missy Elliot? We love you!

And lastly, lets take a moment to appreciate that Rachael Leigh Cook reference, please. Okay, great, we’re good to go. See you next week for another round of Flashback Friday! -ALI HOFFMAN

As you already know, last night we celebrated our  Annual May Young Hollywood Issue with a massive party in Hollywood.

And while the ladies definitely stepped up their game, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t have our eyes on a few dudes in particular.

So at the risk of totally outting our secret crushes, here are our top five hotties from our Young Hollywood party (in no particular order)… -ALI HOFFMAN

Flashback Friday: Welcome to the Dollhouse

Friday, May 3rd, 2013

When choosing this week’s Flashback Friday, I must admit that I was slightly biased. The story I ended up picking, called Welcome to the Dollhouse, is from NYLON’s May 2001 “The Home” issue and it coincidentally reflects my personal style perfectly. To sum it all up in two words: dark fairytale.

The editorial, shot by Serge Leblon, consists of a 10 page spread filled with haunting yet angelic images that will leave you wanting more. And the styling also plays into the whole ethereal vibe–think slip dresses, loose fitting tops and skirts, and pink pointy-toed wedges. Not to mention that perfect, messy, I-just-rolled-out-of-bed wavy hair that to this day I have not yet mastered.

And yeah, I’ve got to bring up the obvious question:  What is going through this girl’s mind?  The intense piano playing, the gazing out a sun-filled window, the lying in dirt? There is totally a whole whimsy bohemia here that just may  be left to the imagination. But one thing I know for sure, there should totally be a Chelsea Wolfe song playing in the background. –NICOLE ZANE

Flashback Friday: Take My Picture

Friday, April 26th, 2013

It’s graduation season, which means a couple of things: yearbook signings and grad parties. The latter is almost always better than the former, especially if your yearbook photo looks anything like mine.

While looking  through the NYLON archives, I came across an editorial from April 2004 entitled “Freeze Frame,” photographed by Glynnis McDaris, and it’s the yearbook you wish you had. Spanning eight pages, the shoot features one portrait per page with each girl’s name, but instead of featuring her grade and hobbies, she lets you know how to get her look. And yeah, I wish my high school yearbook was this cool. –LYNETTE PEREZ

Today’s website, Creature Book, is an online encyclopedia of photographer Andrew Zuckerman’s amazingly detailed portraits of every species we can think of–plus the ones I’ve never heard of before.

Take a look at it–but be aware that a few hours might pass without you so much as realizing. -ALI HOFFMAN

Flashback Friday: The Plain Truth

Friday, April 12th, 2013

Every Friday, we’ll be digging through the NYLON archives and sharing with you our favorite flashback moments:

While flipping through the pages of NYLON’s April 2002 issue (the Beauty issue, dubbed “Pretty Smart” on the cover), I stumbled upon one fashion editorial “The Plain Truth,” showing off compelling Amish-inspired styles.

Flashback Friday: Let The Sun Shine In

Friday, April 5th, 2013

It’s finally spring, which means we’re ditching our winter coats and are ready to expose some skin (or, in  my case, indulge in my first–but certainly not last–ice cream cone of the season). And you know what? It’s a pretty timeless feeling. So timeless that this story in the March 2000 issue of NYLON perfectly captures how we’re probably all feeling right now.

Shout-out to all my girls who made up dances to Brandy & Monica’s “The Boy is Mine” back in 1998.
Check out how awkwardly big the home phones look in the video, and that gold silky number on Brandy is pretty rad. Click below to watch the music video….Enjoy! -ALI HOFFMAN
