Will You Shut Down Your Website This Wednesday?

Monday, January 16th, 2012

Tipahis Wednesday, a fleet of influential websites like Wikipedia and Reddit will shut off their websites for the day.

The move is a protest of SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act that might become federal legislation if passed by The Senate.

If you want a vast oversimplification, the act says if you have something on your website that you didn’t create (a song, a video, an image), the government can shut down your site permanently.

But when you weigh in all the user-generated content on YouTube, Tumblr, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Soundcloud… well, you get the idea -

If you cover a song and post it on Vimeo, illustrate your own version of a fashion advertisement for Pinterest, or even use a quote on your Formspring page, you could (theoretically) get those websites shut down forever.

It’s a long and complicated debate, with Hollywood and the music industry demanding protection for their artists, and websites insisting (very logically) this could be an efficient way to promote censorship and gag the First Amendment.

Will you take down your site on Wednesday?  And what do you think of SOPA’s mission?

Congratulations, Elizabeth Olsen!

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

lo
Last night was a very big night for Ms. Olsen.
Our former cover girl was named Best Actress at the Vancouver Film Critic Circle Awards.

Honored for her breakout performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene,
the newcomer beat out Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams (pretty wild, right?!).

Here’s what we’re wondering:
Do you think this means an Oscar Nomination is coming her way?

And more importantly:
What would/will she wear?!
