Bear Boy Revealed!

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Ashley Luther writes in from California about a recent and mysterious rash of Teddy Bear graffiti spotted all over New York City:

“Hey Faran,

The artist’s name is Phil Lumbang…

And here’s a video of him doing his thing in LA.

Keep up the good blogging,

–Ash”

Here’s a photo, above, of Phil Lumbang, left, with Shepard Fairey. Phil’s day job is at Obey’s studios in California.

Welcome to New York, Phil! Thanks for tagging our neighborhood! xoxox The NYLON kids!

Tag! Under the Bridge

Friday, November 6th, 2009

“Faran-

Found this awesome graffiti near the Brooklyn Bridge down the street from Grimaldi’s.

-Kate”

For those outside of Brooklyn, Grimaldi’s is a killer-amazing pizza place between DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights in NYC.

Other notable pizza places include Arturo’s and Lombardi’s (Soho), Artichoke and Gruppo (East Village), and Otto (Greenwich Village - Fifth Avenue).

And now we’re hungry.

If you have graffiti, send it along:

Tag! The Bear

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

When flipping through photos of the artist Lisa Solberg yesterday, we found something funny:

Here she is in Los Angeles posing with one of those crazy bears!

That makes four that we’ve seen so far, in two cities…

The bears in Nolita…

The bears in Chinatown…

And now here.

Anybody else want to send a photo from this animal-based tagger?

faran@nylonmag.com

(You can send regular graffiti there, too!)

Tag! Zoo Story

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

“Hi Faran,

Found this little creature while walking around campus

-Genevieve”

Guess this is the difference between urban universities and ones in the middle of nowhere -

When I went to school (in Durham, North Carolina) we would see actual squirrels, not just spray painted ones.

Got graffiti?

Send it to faran@nylonmag.com

Tag! Boy’s Club

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

“Hey Faran,

I saw this on The Bowery the other day.

It made me think how women’s faces are painted all over the place, but anonymous men’s faces are sort of MIA, it’s just famous dudes who get painted on walls.

Anyway, maybe this guy’s in a band or something and I didn’t recognize him.

I bet you would though, since you work at NYLON.

Enjoy,

Charlie.”

Hmmm… will think on that, Charlie.  Thanks.

Tag! Lock It Up

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

“Hi Faran,

I was walking along West Broadway in Soho this weekend, when I spotted this painted lock on a fence.

It seemed to be there purely for decoration, and it was really interesting to look at.

I thought it was a good reminder that not all street art has to be painted or pasted.

Even neon tape isn’t the limit of good street art!

Love,

Miranda.”

Very cool.

Though you know, we do love our neon tape here at NYLON.

Do you have graffiti?!  Send it over!  faran@nylonmag.com

Tag! The Fame Game Continues!

Friday, October 30th, 2009

“Hi Faran,

Took this photo in Vienna.

It’s Elvis!

–Laura.”

Holy Hollywood, Batman!

It’s another stencil of a famous person!

If you have graffiti, or a stencil design for Mary Kate Olsen, send it over!

Tag! The Bear Strikes Again

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Whoa.  Shepard Fairey himself gets tagged by Winnie the Pooh.  Interesting.  If you have graffiti, send it over! faran@nylonmag.com

Tag! Good on Paper

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

“Hey Faran,

Not sure if you’ve heard of this artist Marc Johns but he did a series of paper towel art.

I think it’s a good example of how Street Art doesn’t just have to be on a wall, or even necessarily outside.

I found all the images on Divine Caroline.

Seriously, I would crack up if I walked into a public restroom and saw this face sticking out at me.

–Mandie.”

Very cool.  If you have graffiti, send it to faran@nylonmag.com!
