Paging Captain Obvious: Coconut Water Cures Hangovers

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Scientists and doctors have made a major breakthrough.

And by “major,” we mean, “duh.”

According to Time Magazine, Coconut Water is the best hangover remedy they’ve found.

The endorsement comes after months of studies, laboratory testing, and chemical analysis.

But if they’d bothered to come into the NYLON office on any given morning, they would have already known all of that…

Ew! Ah!

What you’re seeing at left isn’t a creepy science experiment.

It’s actually a massive plastic ice cube, called “The Brain Freeze.”

The mold sells for $10, and makes four icy “brains” with each use.

On the downside, getting a reminder of how many brain cells you zap with every martini is probably not the way to start a cocktail party.

On the upside, you can make this into a hell of an April Fool’s joke.

(And obviously, it’s available at Fred Flare.)

My Lobster Soup Brings All The Boys To The Yard

Kelis might be known for her milkshake, but that’s not the only thing she can cook up.

Turns out, the singer is also an aspiring chef.

In the four years since she last released an album (The Hits doesn’t count!), Kelis took a break from the music industry and enrolled in culinary school.

Which explains why, for a recent private listening party, she paired the tunes from her upcoming album with a few of her specialties. Think coconut lobster soup and fried red snapper, all served with Belvedere Vodka cocktails.

No word yet which was better — while Flesh Tone comes out in May, there’s no telling when her kitchen creations will be widely available. xxRebecca

Can You Cure a Hangover?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Today at CNN, the reporters investigate the mystery of hangovers.

They’ve got information on how long they last, how much pain they cause, and how much alcohol it takes to get them.

But one thing they won’t report?

How you can kill your hangover – fast.

So we figured we’d ask you.

What’s the best remedy you know for a hangover?

Think Inside the Box

In America, we get OJ inside a juice box.

In Japan, they get something with a little more kick:

Sake.

Check out these mini-crates of the Japanese rice wine, smuggled over from Tokyo by our web editor, Rebecca Willa Davis.

We tried them yesterday.

They’re fantastic.

Stealth Starbucks?!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

CNN goes behind-the-scenes today at a new “Stealth Starbucks.”

The cafe is owned by the coffee mega-chain, but has no branding, no signs, and no “tall grande venti mocha sugarchino” on the menu.

Instead, it’s pretending to be…

Normal.

But what happens when people catch on?

Will they still come back to the secretly-Starbucks cafe?

Or go across the street and return to their Egg Nog Lattes?

(Editor’s Note: This story has left us craving Egg Nog Lattes. Damn those Starbucks geniuses.)

The Pub Most Likely to Become a Fashion Line

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Our friend Kat Van Leer is a special kind of publicist.

She’s the one who pulled us into Rose Bar before it became the hotspot of New York.

She’s the one who introduced us to the graffiti artist Krink when he paired with InCase.

And she’s the one who took us out to dinner last night at Tanuki Tavern, a place best described as “What would happen if The Brady Bunch opened a sushi joint?”

Designed by interior maven Charlotte Maceaux, the place serves tons of food (including the dubiously named but super tasty “miso fritters”) but also makes you want to do an impromptu fashion shoot on the stairs, the bathroom, or the back wall.

So, how do you say “Sunshine Day” in Japanese?!

Christmas?

What’s that?

It’s already time for Valentine’s Day!

Thanks, Fred Flare, for reminding us that we have exactly two months to crush on someone, date them, dump them, and then booze up with our friends at a dance party that is – let’s face it – more fun than a boyfriend.

(Snoopy Pink Hot Chocolate, $10 at Fred Flare.

They also have a selection of vintage Valentines already for sale.)

CNN Meets PBR

Monday, December 14th, 2009

File under “Shut up, shut up!” -

CNN has a business story called “Let’s hear it for hipster beer.”

It’s hypothesis?

That PBR is now popular because it’s cheap, and therefore recession friendly.

The only weird part?

We’ve been drinking PBR since… well, frankly, since before we could legally drink.

Although perhaps that just helps prove CNN’s point…

Zooey-M-G

Quick: Guess the girl in the photo.

No, it’s not Brigitte Bardot, Lara Stone, or a Playboy Centerfold.

It’s Zooey Deschanel – the same Zooey who landed on the cover of last year’s It Girl issue.

Don’t worry, Ben Gibbard, she hasn’t gone blonde for good – she’s just playing dress-up with photographer Ellen von Unwerth, who shot the indie pin-up (along with Kate Beckinsale) for a series of throwback Absolut ads.

“I don’t always get this opportunity to play this many characters and also do sort of like a silent film,” Deschanel admitted. “Each costume made me feel like the character that I was playing.”

If only she composed a catchy jingle to go along with the probably-not-cotton outfits…xxRebecca
