Off The Wall

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

The film (Untitled) opens in a hotel lobby, with Adam Goldberg’s character pretending to like his brother’s latest piece.

It’s a running theme throughout the movie, with the bottom line being that hotel art is usually of the bland, boring variety.

Which is what makes the Sagamore Hotel in Miami particularly cool.

Not only is the artwork throughout the hotel continually rotated with the latest from young, emerging artists (right now there’s a lightbulb swing hanging in the lobby and a bunch of 3-D mushroom plastered above the check-in counter), but there are also inspirational quotes stenciled all over the walls.

On the 2nd floor, where I’m shacked up with the rest of the Diesel team, I’m reminded that “painting is just another way of keeping a diary.” (Thanks, Pablo Picasso!)

Even (Untitled)’s Adrian would approve. xxRebecca

Bienvenido A Miami

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Diesel is behind some of the craziest parties of recent memory.

Glow-in-the-dark rave? Check.

Kanye cameo concert? Check.

Three-ring anniversary circus? Check.

So when the denim pros announced one final Diesel:U:Music stop in Miami, there was no question: I had to be there.

After all, everything seems to be a bit bigger, a bit wilder, a bit more fun in Miami (watch the music video for Will Smith’s “Miami” if you need proof).

Check back for my updates on Jemina Pearl’s jeans of choice, Santigolds’ drink of choice, and Kid Cudi’s hotel pool of choice. And if you’ve got a ticket? I’ll see you at the show! xxRebecca

Seattle Goes Stomping!

Friday, October 9th, 2009

If you’re in Seattle and need some shoes, check it out:

Doc Martens just opened a pop-up store.

You can get their latest collection, and also stomp around their renovated warehouse, which would probably become a tourist destination if it weren’t a temporary piece of fun.

Want to visit?

1509 Second Ave., Seattle

Can’t make it?

Postcard from Vegas

Monday, August 31st, 2009

At the Las Vegas airport, Crystal and I met a very nice lizard wearing WeSC headphones.

He said, “Hello, little girls.

Normally I would eat you, but today I issue a challenge: go forth and find the coolest sneakers and jeans at PROJECT, the Vegas trade show where Adidas, Converse, Siwy, Citizens of Humanity, and a gazillion other labels are camped out and waiting for you to love them.

Go now!  Before I change my mind!  Fashion girls are always so tasty!”

And so we ran.

Stay tuned tomorrow, when we hope to make the lizard proud.

And if we can’t, whatever -

We’ll totally let it eat Jared.

Alexi Goes To a Pool Party

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Editor’s Note: We sent the actress Alexi Wasser to a pool party in LA. Why? Because it was fun, and we live in New York.

Pool parties on the roof of the Standard Hotel are always fun, but add DJs (Ana Calderan, Mickey Schiff), bands (Dawes, Warpaint), tacos, squirt guns, screen printing, and a vending machine that sells bikinis and board shorts and it’s epic.

Yes, apparently, vending machines aren’t just for soda and candy bars anymore. They can take things to a whole new level of fashionable water wear when you’re in a pinch. Just imagine: everyone’s in the pool, and you’re all bummed cuz you forget your bathing suit at home…. No need to worry anymore, or jump into the pool naked (Don’t do that. Trust me, I have, and it will only come back to haunt you, especially when everyone has a camera phone nowadays).

The collection in the vending machine was inspired by Quicksilver’s original board shorts from the 70’s and 80’s (Remember those days? Probably not, but you’ll look like you do now). The series includes four different designs inspired by each Standard Hotel (LA, New York, and Miami). I’m wearing the LA shorts with the Quicksilver bikini top.

The board shorts have been updated with modern fits, fabrics, and technology, and come packaged in a specially designed waterproof travel bag. Special details can also be found on inside their waistbands, including a handpicked list of addresses corresponding to must-see destinations in each city- hand picked and personally written by legendary skateboarder and Quiksilver creative director Natas Kaupas.

The first vending machine is located on the rooftop deck at the Standard Downtown LA. The board shorts are also available online at shopthestandard.com. xo, alexi wasser

Living Large With Mark Hunter

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Mark Hunter wants you to move into Blink 182’s house with him.

Why?

We’re not completely sure.

We didn’t even know Blink 182 had a house, and always pictured them as sleeping-in-the-van type of boys.

But if you’re interested in chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool and then shooting some b-ball outside after school, then watch Mark hawk the sweet life on YouTube and dive in.

Falafel!

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

CNN iReport is the Citizen Journalist section of the network, where people around the world write in with their experiences and photographs.

Sometimes, like with the Iran election protests, those reports were serious, courageous, and sad.

But other times, they’re just crazy.

Like today, when CNN iReport features falafels around the world.

Read after you’ve had lunch - otherwise, beware the cravings…

You Have Chosen to Ford the River

Friday, July 24th, 2009

No, the photo at left isn’t a scene from Big Love.

It’s actually a shot of two college students in Utah who serve as tour guides for This Is The Place Heritage Park, a large woodland sanctuary in Salt Lake City that the New York Times compares to a pioneer Colonial Williamsburg.

But anyone born between 1978 - 1998 knows better.

Really, this is the living, breathing version of our favorite video game, Oregon Trail.

You can throw tomohawks at this place.

You can trade stuff at the local general store.

But sadly, you can’t hunt buffalo, deer, and squirrels - the only reason most of us played that game in the first place…
