Runway to Real Girl: Ben Sherman for PPQ

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Fact: I am not a model. Not even close.

Fact: I still like to dress like one. Specifically, like one dressed to stomp down a runway.

Of course, this isn’t always possible. So when I heard Ben Sherman was doing a line with PPQ – a British brand similar to Anna Sui that puts Agyness Deyn and Iekeleine Stange on its catwalk – I was curious.

So I zoomed across the street to the Ben Sherman store in Soho, and started getting dressed.

Here’s the verdict: The dresses (a range of five inspired by each decade from the ’60s until now…) fit VERY differently – while the ’70s and ’00 dress were flowy, the ’60s mini dress and ’90s ska dress were skin tight. That’s actually really good news, since it means each dress will fit a few different body types.

The other bonus? There’s only 300 of each dress in the world, so your chances of crashing into someone else wrecking your fashion moment is pretty slim.

In the end I went with the white ’00 dress (at left), because even though it didn’t make me look like a model, I did feel pretty sexy.

“Oh,” said Dana as I left the store, “Gwyneth Paltrow just wore that one to Jay-Z’s wedding.”

Okay, so much for my theory about nobody else rocking your favorite new dress… but I guess for Gwyneth, I can deal.
