Maggie Gyllenhaal was kind enough to take a moment out of her "prom night" (the theme of this week's Kate Young x Target party) to talk to us. Now that we're all caught up, we know which new music she's listening to, what's on summer reading list, and what everyone seems to be curious about: her pixie cut. But don't ask her what her husband thinks of her hair--Gyllenhaal rightly told one reporter that he loves her regardless of her hair length choices.

What are some of your favorite things to wear in the summer? "Last summer I just had a baby, so I was wearing a bunch of long flowing dresses the whole time. I bought a bunch of them, and I think I'll probably wear then again this summer. It's really good to have more flow-y, airy things."

Summer's great for having shorter hair, but do you ever look at girls with longer hair and get jealous? "I do, yeah. Right after I cut my hair--I liked it, but I thought, "Oh no! Wait, hold on. What about the long, long hair thing?" But you know what? Whatever. I never ever once, after my first daughter was born, let my hair grow long. I'm always cutting it or doing something new to it."

How are you liking it your short hair? Who cut it? "Serge Normant cuts it. I originally cut it for a movie where I played a really wild, super out there musician and it was right for the movie. When I got home, I had to figure out what to do with it. So I asked Serge to cut it all off. I love it. I have this fantasy of having mermaid long hair, but I wasn't even close to having that when I cut it."

What music are you really into right now? "I like the new Nick Cave album--Push The Sky Away--which I really only started listening to because my husband was listening to it. It's not something I would have sought out, but it's really good. I'm also curious to hear Jim James' Regions of Light and Sound of God solo album."

What's your favorite summer read? Do you have a guilty pleasure book? "I'm really into short stories. There's a book that's super thick of Deborah Eisenberg stories. She's married to Wally (Wallace) Shawn. A friend of mind recommended it, and it took me a year just to get half way through it--it's that thick!"
